COURT UNFREEZES PATIENCE JONATHAN’S ACCOUNT

A Federal High Court in Lagos on Thursday issued an order unfreezing the Skye Bank account of a former First Lady, Patience Jonathan. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had in November 2016, filed an application before the court, seeking an order freezing the account. The commission had contended that the funds were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. On Thursday at the resumed hearing of the case, the court issued an order unfreezing the account following an application filed and argued before the court by her lawyer, Mr Ifedayo Adedipe (SAN), who a team of lawyers. Adedipe had urged the court to unfreeze Jonathan’s account on the grounds that she was not a party in the suit leading to the freezing order. Citing judicial authorities, Adedipe contended that the suit was an abuse of court process as the court had no Jurisdiction to make an order against one who is not a party in a suit filed before the court. LAGOS PDP ASKS FASHOLA TO CLARIFY STATE’S DEBT BURDEN DURING HIS ADMINISTRATION

The Lagos State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has given the former governor of the state, Mr. Babatunde Fashola seven days ultimatum to confirm or debunk the allegation that his administration left huge debt burden 2015 when he left office in 2015. The party made the call following a statement last week by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode inherited huge debt burden, which has hindered him from embarking on more development projects. In a statement yesterday, PDP’s Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taofik Gani said Fashola must respond to the allegation. He also urged members of the State House of Assembly to immediately constitute a committee to probe the issue in the interest of taxpayers. GOOD NEWS FOR AFRICA’S ELEPHANTS: CHINA IS LOSING ITS TASTE FOR IVORY

BEIJING — China will close 67 ivory carving factories and retail shops on Friday, roughly one-third of the total, as it moves to implement a pledge to end all domestic ivory sales by the end of the year. The news will foster hopes that an end to the elephant poaching crisis in Africa might be in sight, and comes as a new study shows that prices of ivory in China are continuing to plummet. Reducing demand from China, the world’s biggest ivory market, is probably the single most important factor that could help bring an end to the widespread poaching of elephants in Africa. In a report issued Wednesday, Save The Elephants said the average wholesale price of tusks in China was $2,100 per kilogram in early 2014, but fell to $1,100 by late 2015, before reaching $730 in February 2017.
